Kent’s most exciting new address
In the heart of Maidstone, Len House is one of the town’s most distinctive architectural landmarks, with its grand scale and bold Art Deco form positioned proudly on the riverside since the late 1930s.
Once known as The Rootes Building, it was originally a flagship car engineering workshop, showroom and offices; its design reflecting the glamour and innovation of the era. This architectural masterpiece even inspired Fisher Price’s classic children’s toy garage in the 1970s, and the building’s famous vehicle ramp remains to this day.
Moving into its new era as Len House, the building’s striking architecture and 1930s modernist features have been meticulously restored and transformed into a destination for modern living and commercial life.
Heritage and contemporary design have been brought together to create a place rich in character and quiet sophistication – a building shaped by its past, now designed for how we live, work, and enjoy today.

Art Deco heritage,
reimagined for today
Len House is more than a development, it is a carefully restored piece of Maidstone’s history.
Originally opened in 1938 at the height of the Rootes Motor Company’s success, the building was a flagship showroom offering cars for ‘the masses and the millionaires’ and reflecting an era of motoring innovation. Designed by E. Souster of Howard & Souster, it embraced bold modernism to showcase the glamour of the automotive world.
Its striking Art Deco design was both practical and theatrical. Double-height, open-plan showrooms were designed to impress, and its distinctive tower, will now be lit up with a replica LED light that will echo the original 1930’s neon sign that will extend the full length of the building, creating a dramatic presence after dark.
An icon revived
Among the building’s most memorable features is the original vehicle ramp, which has been retained as part of the building’s transformation, and once inspired the iconic Fisher-Price toy garage. It remains as a unique and characterful reminder of Len House’s past life.
Today, Len House stays true to the vision that inspired its design, where quiet glamour meets innovation. Original features and architectural detailing have been sensitively restored, ensuring the building’s character remains central to its transformation.
A landmark once defined by progress, has been reimagined for a new generation to live, work and connect.
